Naturally, she had to follow. He’d barely picked up his nail gun when she appeared, huddled inside a bright scarlet fleece jacket that matched the bloom of her cheeks. Was that her coat? It certainly wasn’t his mom’s. And her hair was scrunched up beneath a new-looking shearling aviator hat complete with earflaps and pompom.

“Aren’t you freezing?” she asked. Only Des could make such a getup look like the latest in fashion.

“Nah. I just have to keep moving.”

“Do you ever sleep? Or are you denying yourself that, too?”

He heard the concern in her voice and tried to ignore it. He’d been up well before dawn, as he had every morning for the past few months. He could handle it. He had to handle it. “I get all I need,” he answered.

One shapely eyebrow lifted at his response. “Right. That noise I heard outside my window, in the middle of the night, was from the nail gun bird.”

“Six a.m. is hardly the middle of the night.”

“It is in my world,” she retorted. “It is when there’s no decent coffee. When did you last eat?”

Zach turned back to his project. “Mother hen doesn’t suit you, Des. I’m almost done. I’ll be in soon.”

Des shoved her hands deep in the pockets of her jacket and surveyed his handiwork.

“What are you doing, anyway?”

He felt a flush of pride. The idea had occurred to him as he woke up and he’d put off the rest of his chores to get it done.

“Wheelchair ramps. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before.” He gestured to a series of neatly stacked wooden wedges. “I’ll fix this one to the front door. That’s a portable ramp for the garage and over there is a series of flats that can be used for whenever Joe wants to get from the house to the yard. He’ll need help, of course, but this way, we can take him outside. He’ll be able to visit his horses, see the cattle, get into the barns.”

“You’re assuming your dad will remain wheelchair-bound.”

There was challenge in her voice, and something softer, a seductively pitiless care that eased its way inside him, warming what was cold, lightening what was unbearable. Relentlessly offering what he could not accept.

“I’m assuming nothing. All I know is that right now, right here, he’s stuck in that thing. I’m going to make it possible for him to get around. That chair won’t go through snow.”

“How do you know he’ll go? He barely comes out of his room now.”

Zach lifted the nail gun again. “He’ll go. He’s an outdoors guy. Right now, he thinks he’ll be stuck inside for the rest of his life.” He shot one nail, then another, wincing at the impact on his overworked hand. “If I can get him out to the corrals, he’ll be able to stand up against the rails. The horses will mob him. It’ll make his day.”

“Hang on.” Des put her hand on his arm, forcing him to put down the nail gun.
